Massachusetts
Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)
“Every
family should have a basic supply kit that could be used for any
emergency,” states MEMA Director Stephen J. McGrail. “Everyone
should keep certain items around the house in the event of a hurricane
or other severe weather. A portable radio, flashlight, extra batteries,
and extra food and water are all essential to help your family weather
the storm.” Every household should have a supply of canned goods
and other non-perishable foods that do not need cooking, along with
bottled water, extra prescription medication, and extra food and
supplies for infants and pets. A manual can opener and a basic first aid
kit are also essential. “You should also call your local authorities to
find out where emergency shelters are located in your community,” said
McGrail. “It is important to know where your local shelter is before
an emergency situation occurs.” The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)
is the state agency responsible for coordinating federal, state and
local resources to protect the public during disasters and emergencies.
MEMA helps develop plans for effective response to all hazards, trains
emergency personnel, provides information to families and communities,
and assists in recovery from disaster losses. You can learn about MEMA
and Hurricanes by visiting the MEMA homepage at www.mass.gov/mema. |
